In its survey analysis of religious freedom in Azerbaijan, Forum 18 News Service has found continuing violations of freedom of thought, conscience and belief. The state attempts to control or limit the majority Muslim and minority religious communities, including imposing strict censorship, violating its international human rights commitments. The situation in the Nakhichevan exclave is worse than the rest of the country. Officials often claim that Azerbaijan is a state of religious tolerance – a view promoted by government-favoured groups – but the state promotes intolerance of some minorities and has not introduced the genuine religious freedom necessary for genuine religious tolerance to flourish. A Jehovah’s Witness whose husband died in a shooting last weekend is in a stable condition despite refusing blood during surgery to save her life.

Amanda Hustler, 40, was shot twice in the back during an incident that saw her husband Adam killed at their luxury home in the Cornish village of Porth Kea.

Family friend Tim Mears explained there was “no issue” over a blood transfusion because of Mrs Hustler’s beliefs.

Amanda Hustler, 39, is battling for life after she was shot twice in the back – allegedly by her daughter’s ex-boyfriend.

In the latest instance of government action against Jehovah’s Witnesses and other minority Christians in Russia, officials in Ufa (Republic of Bashkortostan) have banned a planned Jehovah’s Witnesses congress, according to a September 9, 2008 report by the Interfax news agency.
