Turkmen president issued an amnesty this month, but did include those who refuse compulsory military service on grounds of conscientious objection, like Jehovah’s Witnesses. The latter got two years of hard labour and had their Bible seized.

Ashgabat (AsiaNews/F18) – Refusing to perform compulsory military service on grounds of conscientious objection is so serious a crime in Turkmenistan that offenders do not deserve amnesty. Currently, five Jehovah’s Witnesses are languishing in jail and this for several months, because of their refusal to wear a uniform—four of them have even earned a month of solitary confinement. Kenneth Mort

By Greg Bolt

Family and friends gather to mourn and remember the life of Lowell’s go-to guy, Ken Mort

He was the go-to guy who could always get something done, who always had time to help and who could always fix what was broken.

By Joel Meares

It’s the first Saturday of March and a perfect day for Jehovah’s Witnessing. The sky is clear, the air is crisp and a fresh copy of The Watchtower, stamped March 1, 2010, is ready to be distributed.

At least, I assume it’s a good day for Witnessing; this is my first time. Frank and Lydia Tavolacci — from a Jehovah’s Witness congregation in Glendale, Queens — have invited me along for a morning of door-knocking in their mostly residential neighborhood. The London-based human rights group Amnesty International has criticized the state of human rights protection in Armenia, noting persisting “impunity for perpetrators of human rights violations.”

In its annual “State Of The World’s Human Rights” report released on Thursday, Amnesty also condemned the restriction of freedom of expression and attacks on journalists in Armenia, as well as “the ban on holding demonstrations in the center of the capital, Yerevan”, which it said has remained in place since being introduced during the state of emergency in March 2008. Doctors treating the cancer sufferer at the centre of the extraordinary medical case went to court as they believed it was the only way to save her life.

They wanted permission to sedate the 55 year-old woman in her home with a drug hidden in a glass of Ribena, so they could get around her phobia of hospitals and needles to take her for desperately needed surgery.

Her ordeal, disclosed by the normally secretive Court of Protection, is one of a small number of cases where judges have been asked to decide on the fate of patients. Read the rest of this entry »
